A Great Introduction to Kenya

EXPLORE KENYA FROM BUSH TO BEACH

Suggested itinerary for two adults…
This journey through Kenya is to move through contrast from golden plains giving way to turquoise sea, the pulse of the wild dissolving into the hush of the coast.

This twelve-day itinerary traces that rhythm, beginning where the horizon opens across the Maasai Mara and ending where the Indian Ocean breathes slow against Watamu’s white sands.

It is a journey shaped by intimacy and immersion: light aircraft flights that follow the contours of the land, lodges that open to birdsong and salt air, days guided by instinct and light.

Here, time expands, held between the echo of lion calls at dawn and the hush of waves at dusk. Every moment is designed not for spectacle, but for presence.

DAYS ONE TO TWO

Nairobi

Nairobi is more than a gateway; it is the threshold between worlds.

Beneath its wide skies, colonial gardens and craft ateliers sit in quiet conversation with modern rhythm.

Your first days unfold slowly, a soft acclimatisation to Kenyan pace and grace. Encounter the long-lashed gaze of endangered Rothschild giraffes at the Giraffe Centre and wander the shaded veranda of the Karen Blixen Museum, where stories of courage and place still linger in the air.

This boutique hotel rests at the foot of the Ngong Hills, a sanctuary of calm and proportion. Its verandas open to manicured lawns and the scent of jacaranda. Suites are generous and light-filled, their design echoing an older world of safari elegance with hardwood, linen and quiet service that anticipates without asking.

DAYS THREE TO SIX

The Maasai Mara

The journey west by light aircraft crosses the Rift Valley’s vastness as you head on safari. The earth deepens to red, the horizon stretches, and the sense of arrival is visceral. You stay in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, where life moves to the slow and ancient rhythm of migration. Herds of wildebeest and zebra flood the plains, their movement shadowed by lion prides in the grass and lone cheetahs crouched in amber light. Elephants drift between acacia groves; giraffes step through dawn mist; hyenas laugh at dusk, marking the edge of night. Above it all, vultures circle the thermals, tracing stories of life and survival written in the dust.

Every drive brings another revelation: a leopard draped in fig-tree shade, the flick of a jackal’s ear, a lilac-breasted roller flashing its impossible colours against storm clouds. The air hums with the sound of crickets, wings, and distant thunder. Here, time belongs to the animals; humans are only guests.

This lodge rests high on a private escarpment, gazing out over the wilderness. Its canvas suites are airy and secluded, blending openness with quiet refinement; brass fixtures, polished wood, and the hush of canvas walls stirred by wind. From this vantage, dawn spills golden across the grasslands, and evenings gather around firelight and silence.

DAYS SEVEN TO TWELVE

Watamu, Kenya Coast

The journey east begins in the cool morning air as your light aircraft lifts from the Mara, tracing the Rift Valley once more before descending to the coast. The landscape transforms beneath you, the savannahs fading into farmland, then mangrove and lagoon. By afternoon, you touch down in Malindi, the air warm and scented with salt.

The following five days flow to the rhythm of the sea. Each morning begins with the hush of waves and the slow reveal of light over the coast. One day, you may set out on a dhow at sunrise, the sail billowing soft against the wind; another, you drift above coral gardens alive with parrotfish and turtle. Between excursions, there is time to linger at a beachfront café, to walk the tideline, or to relax by the pool.

As the days pass, the transition from bush to beach feels complete: the body softens, the mind loosens its hold. Evenings are spent under an indigo sky, dining to the slow rhythm of waves and cicadas.

Hemingways Watamu

Ocean breeze threads through open verandas and shaded colonnades at the tropical hotel. Suites gaze directly over the bay, light-filled and restrained in design with linen, teak, and the murmur of surf. Mornings begin with the scent of coffee and salt air; afternoons invite rest, sea swims, or quiet reading beneath palms.
